Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)
Integrated physical therapy would not be complete without the exercise, training, or reeducation of the system to show it how we want it to work. This process is unique for each individual, as are the dysfunctions and goals for treatment. Strength begins with the core and radiates out. Very similarly to posture, there must be core stability before there is power and mobility from the body. This baseline of core strength is incorporated into every treatment via manual resistance in the form of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF).
PNF involves applying appropriate resistance to very fine movement patterns to elicit a core response. This rewiring of the motor system begins centrally with stability in a range of motion that the client can comfortably control. This methodical approach prevents exacerbation of the system with movements that are too large or difficult. After the correct response is elicited and becomes internalized the client is ready to progress to the next step.
As the neuromuscular response grows stronger, the patterns become larger with the addition of more resistance, synergy with other regions of the body, larger movement patterns, and integration back to function. This “fine tuning” neuromuscular reeducation is an excellent tool to recover stability in regions that have been injured or inhibited. Gaining stability in these areas has a high correlation with the resolution of pain in the same areas. This method is also a perfect way to gauge how strength is progressing and if the client is ready to progress to the gym or sport-specific workouts. The end result is strength where there used to be pain, and empowerment where there used to be self-doubt, empowering you to live your best life, every day.
